Schaefer scores for Cougars in 2-1 win over Bears

David Schaefer scored two from the spot to lead Mount Royal

EDMONTON – David Schaefer scored two penalties to lead the Mount Royal Cougars to a 2-1 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.

The win is the 10th on the season for the Cougars, who now sit at 10-2-0. For the Bears, they move to 6-2-2.

Alberta was buoyed by Marcus Velado-Tseguye, who potted their only goal of the game.

The referee's whistle was busy this afternoon, with four yellow and one red card issued in the contest.

It was a quick start to the match for the Golden Bears, as the second-year Velado-Tseguye struck his fourth of the season past Cougar keep Aidan Dumoulin in just the 11th minute on a great effort to give the home side an early 1-0 lead.

The Cougars would settle in and dominate play for much of the half. They outshot Alberta 6-2 in the first, with David Schaefer leading both sides with 3 shots.

It was also Schaefer who would knot the game up at 1 with only a few minutes left in the frame when he put one past Ezoua from the penalty spot for his eighth of the year, putting him firmly in second place in the CW golden boot race.

The second half started relatively quiet compared to the first with both sides battling a low sun and some wind. The Cougars would continue their strength in possession, ultimately leading to some sustained offensive pressure in the 78th minute that led to a controversial handball penalty being awarded to the visitors. Schaefer would make no mistake for his second of the game and giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.

The Cougars will travel across the river tomorrow for a matchup with the MacEwan Griffins, before finishing the season next weekend against the Calgary Dinos. The Bears will host the Dinos tomorrow, before finishing the smoke-delayed game against UBCO on Wednesday this week.
