EDMONTON - The forward trio of
Eric Florchuk,
Noah Boyko, and Daneel Lategan provided more than enough offensive firepower, combining for five goals and eight points in a 6-3 Bears win over MacEwan on Saturday night.Â
Boyko and Florchuk each scored a pair, to go along with markers from Lategan and
Josh Prokop. The win gives the Bears the weekend sweep over MacEwan, outscoring the Griffins 11-5 in two games. With their two wins, the Bears (3-2-1) also move above .500 for the first time this season.Â
While he didn't face a ton of rubber,
Matt Berlin came up with a couple key stops in the third for the Bears, turning aside 12 shots in total. Thomas Davis stopped 44 of the 50 shots he faced in a busy night between the Griffin pipes. Jordan Taupert scored a pair for MacEwan, with Kole Gable adding the other goal in the loss.Â
Finishing with a 50-15 shot advantage, the Bears spent a majority of Saturday night in the offensive zone. Florchuk opened the scoring midway through the first, beating Davis on an abbreviated breakaway. Boyko doubled the lead late in the opening frame, tipping in a
Jayden Platz point shot.Â
Lategan popped his first of the season just 2:19 into the second, tapping in a beautiful centering feed from
Justin Hall. Boyko ripped home his second of the game just four minutes later, beating a screened Davis with a bullet from the right circle.Â
After a Prokop tally made it 5-0 Alberta, the Griffins found a spark late in the second. Taupert scored the first of his two on the night midway through the second, the first of three unanswered by MacEwan.Â
The Griffins only managed four shots in the third period, but all four were quality scoring chances. Gable beat Berlin from distance off the rush five minutes in, before Taupert cut the lead to two with his second of the game 83 seconds later. A Berlin stop on a Carter Chorney breakaway moments later seemed to take the wind out of the MacEwan comeback.Â
Next on the schedule for the Bears is a home-and-home series with the defending champion Calgary Dinos. MacEwan will host the Manitoba Bisons, looking for their first win of the season.Â
