Game Recap: Pandas Basketball | | Connor Hood

Kary's stellar second half leads Pandas to rout of Heat

EDMONTON – Fifth-year guard Emma Kary scored a game-high 28 points on 11/18 shooting, leading the Pandas basketball team to a 79-52 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday night.

Kary, who is within striking distance of the Pandas all-time scoring record, scored 18 of her 28 in the second half to put away the Heat, and lead the Pandas to their 7th conference win (7-2). The loss drops the Heat to 6-5 in conference play.

Jenna Harpe also added 13, with Claire Signatovich adding 12 points and 15 rebounds in another double-double performance. Kelsey Falk led the Heat with 13 on 5/7 shooting.

Being the first conference game following the winter break, neither team opened Friday's contest particularly sharp on offence. The Pandas held a slim 19-9 lead after one, holding the Heat to 2/12 shooting through 10 minutes. The teams also combined for 13 turnovers, including eight from the visitors.

The poor shooting performance from the Heat carried over into the second, with the visitors making just four of their 17 shots. The Pandas were able to take a fairly commanding 39-25 lead into the half, with Kary pacing the Pandas with 10, and Harpe adding nine on 3/7 shooting.

A tighter third quarter kept the game within reach, with Alberta only adding to their lead by four. The depth of the Pandas proved to be too much, however, as Alberta put the Heat away with a 21-12 fourth quarter. 30 of the Pandas 79 points came from beyond the arc, as they hit 41% of their attempts from three.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. at Saville Community Sports Centre.
