Former U SPORTS Player of the Year
Luke Philp has become the 14th Golden Bears Hockey alumni to play in the NHL, making his debut on Tuesday night for the Chicago Blackhawks.Â
Philp joins former Bears forward Derek Ryan (Edmonton Oilers) as the only GBH alumni currently on an NHL roster — Ryan has been a full-time NHL player since 2016. Goalie Zach Sawchenko made his NHL debut last season for the San Jose Sharks, spending this season on the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.Â
The former Kootenay Ice star spent three seasons with the Golden Bears (2016-2019), recording 42 goals and 103 points in 78 career conference games. Across all competitions, Philp recorded 153 points in 125 games at the University of Alberta. He was named the Canada West Player of the Year in both 2017/18 and 2018/19, along with earning the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the national player of the year in 2019.Â
He helped guide the Golden Bears to three-consecutive Canada West Championships, and was an integral member of the 2018 U SPORTS Championship winning Bears, scoring three goals in three UCup games in Fredericton, New Brunswick.Â
Prior to joining the Bears, Philp spent parts of six seasons in the Western Hockey League, including five with the Kootenay Ice. He was also the captain of the Red Deer Rebels in 2015-16. Since turning pro, Philp has suited up in 179 AHL games with the Flames and Blackhawks minor league affiliates.Â
