Bears & Pandas earn 14 medals at 2023 GBO

Alberta caps off 50th Annual GBO with eight medals on Saturday

EDMONTON - Alberta picked up 14 medal finishes during the 50th Annual Golden Bears Open in the University of Alberta Butterdome. 

Friday saw the Bears and Pandas pick up six podium finishes, highlighted by a pair of Alberta relay teams picked up gold, with both the Bears 4x200m and Pandas 4x800m teams placing first. 

While not her primary event, Catharina Kluyts earned a bronze in the women's 60m, to go along with bronze medals from Spencer Allen (men's pole vault), the Cassian Murray-White (men's 3000m) and the Bears 4x800m relay team. The silver from Allen pushed him into second in the U SPORTS rankings with a 4.75m final height. It marks the first competitive season for Allen since 2018/19. 

The Golden Bears & Pandas added eight more individual medals on Saturday. Alberta owned the 1000m, with Ron MacLean earning gold on the men's side with a time of 2:25.92, with Olivia Cooper taking gold on the women's side, finishing at 2:47.63. 

The Pandas also swept the women's triple jump; Autumn Cole earned gold with a jump of 11.80m, followed by Larissa Bishop (11.31m) and Alicia Lo (11.29m). 

Also earning medals on Saturday was Holly Harrison (Women's Pentathlon), Will Cebuliak (Men's 1500m), and Regev Stillman (Men's Heptathlon). Stillman also broke the Bears record in the heptathlon with a score of 4712, breaking the previous record of 4486 set by Derek Parker last season. 

Next on the Track calendar is the Bison Open, next weekend in Winnipeg.
