EDMONTON - The Golden Bears scored off of two set pieces, including a David Chung penalty, to beat the Victoria Vikes 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
The hosts also survived a red card that was issued in the 47th minute and left Victoria with a man advantage for the majority of the second half.
The win continues the Golden Bears (3-0-4) recent good form and they escape the weekend with a perfect six points. They hold a firm grip on the second place position in the Prairie Division. The young Vikes squad drops to 2-4-2 and sit fourth in the Pacific Division.
The Bears were largely dominant in the first half spurred on by two goals from set pieces. The first goal was a 32nd minute header from rookie defender Joel Martins-Correia that found the net from a great corner by fourth-year Morgan Graham.
The 1-0 lead would last just 10 minutes until Victoria was penalized on a handball inside the box. Third-year Bears midfielder David Chung calmly finished from the spot for his third goal of the year and a 2-0 advantage for the home side.
Early in the second half, Bears captain Morgan Graham was sent off, leading to a large period of dominance from the Vikes. They fired 10 shots in the second half including 4 on target but could not beat the Bears sturdy defence and a great game from fourth-year goalkeeper Chris Ezoua, who picked up his first clean sheet of the season.
It was not all negatives in the game for the Vikes, as multiple players played well including a great game from rookie Archie Tugwell who started at right-back but by the end of the game was playing an attacking role and led the squad with three shot attempts.
Next up for the Bears is a road trip to Fraser Valley to face the Cascades (2-4), while the Vikes host the 1-5 Lethbridge Pronghorns.
