Pandas Tennis primed for national three-peat

Two-time defending champion Pandas to play Montreal on Friday

Looking to cement their status as a dynasty in Canadian University Tennis, the Pandas Tennis team heads to Toronto looking for a national championship three-peat.

The Pandas captured the last two national championships held, winning their second solo title in 2019 and third in October of 2021.

Alberta will open their 2022 championship on Friday, as they battle the Montreal Carabins in the national semifinal at 9:00 a..m ET. The bronze and gold medal fixtures are scheduled for August 14th. The University of Toronto will take on the Atlantic All-Stars in the other semifinal on Friday.

Already established as one of the best programs over the last four years, the Pandas head to the 2022 Championship on a 19-match win streak. The Pandas last loss came in the 2018 national final, with their combined record standing at 113-20 in singles and doubles matches over the past three years.

This season alone, the Pandas own a 7-0 team record, winning 42 of the 49 matches they've played.

"The season has gone very well to date with the Pandas, as they have dominated the teams in the Western Region and finishing the regular season undefeated," said UAlberta Tennis head coach Russ Sluchinski. "We have a very experienced team, with all the players in our starting lineup having won at least one National Championship."

Heading to Toronto will be Jena Cheng, Alexandra Jewitt, Katie Johnson, Jessica Kreutz, Emma Rutherford, Tereza Simonova, and Sandra Taskovic, all of whom helped lead the Pandas to a 5-2 win over UBC in the Western Regional Championship in March. Rutherford was also named the 2021 University Championship MVP in October.

"The teams we play at the Nationals are always well prepared and I do not expect anything different this year," continued Sluchinski. "I feel if we play our best tennis our team will be tough to beat and we should have a great chance to win another championship."
