Bears sweep Griffins to close out regular season

Alberta finishes atop Canada West with 16-3-1 record

EDMONTON - Putting a bow on their regular season, the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Golden Bears picked up a six-straight win by virtue of a 5-1 victory over the MacEwan Griffins, Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Eric Florchuk and Nolan Volcan scored a pair each, while Noah Philp stayed hot with another goal for Alberta. Taz Burman and Nick Schneider combined to stop 11 of the 12 MacEwan shots they faced, splitting the regular season finale.

The win locks in a 16-3-1 record for Alberta, who enter the CW post-season as the No. 1 seed. The Bears will earn a bye through next week's quarter-final round, before hosting a best-of-three semifinal series at Clare Drake Arena, March 4-6.

The Griffins conclude their inaugural Canada West season with a 3-17-0 record, which contained plenty of positives and building blocks.

One such positive was goalie Ty Taylor, who despite allowing five goals on Saturday, was by far and away the best Griffin, and perhaps the best player on the ice for either team. The former Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick stopped 39 of the 44 shots he faced, including 34 of the first 35.

As it was last Friday night in their previous matchup, the scoreboard was level after 20 and 40, despite a large gap on the shot clock.

Facing a 30-5 deficit in shots midway through the second, it was the Griffins who somehow managed to score first. Jordan Taupert banged in a deflected puck past Schneider, who had made his way into the crease not three minutes earlier.

The lead would last until the dying seconds of the period, with Florchuk finally beating Taylor, jamming in a puck stuck on the goal line.

Despite his stellar play, Taylor couldn't hold the Bears at bay for a full 60, with Alberta scoring four unanswered in the third to earn the 5-1 win. Volcan netted a pair in the third, with Philp adding his 8th of the season, before Florchuk sealed the win with his second of the night late.
