Bears cruise past depleted Griffins

No. 2 ranked Bears sweep MacEwan with 92-56 win

EDMONTON - Taking advantage of a banged up and depleted MacEwan Griffins roster, the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Golden Bears cruised to a 92-56 win, Saturday night at Saville.

Dressing just eight players, seven of whom saw the court, the Griffins put forth a commendable performance, with the depth and talent of the Golden Bears eventually prevailing. Leading by just 11 at the half, the Bears outscored the Griffins 51-26 in the second half, including 30-12 in the fourth.

Three Bears finished with double digit point totals, led by Brandon Meiklejohn's 14 points, and 12 each from Bryce Solis and Colton Gibb. The Bears finished the game shooting 45% from beyond the arc, led by Meiklejohn's 4/6 shooting from three, and four threes from Solis.

The Griffins were led by 17 from Jesse Trussler, who played all 40 minutes for MacEwan. All five starters played north of 30 minutes each, with Matthew Osunde adding 15 points.

The Bears, the hosts of the 2022 U SPORTS Final 8 in April, are now a perfect 12-0 in conference play, and 18-0 overall this season. The loss drops the winless Griffins to 0-12.

Alberta will visit the 6-6 Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, before hosting the Calgary Dinos to close out the regular season on February 26th and 27th. The Griffins, meanwhile, will host the 5-9 MRU Cougars next weekend.

The first weekend of playoff basketball begins on March 4th.
