Game Recap: Golden Bears Volleyball | | Calgary Sports Information

Bears top Dinos for ninth-straight win

CALGARY – The University of Calgary men's volleyball team fell to the No. 1 University of Alberta Golden Bears, 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19), Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.

The loss puts the Dinos at 3-7 in their season, while the Golden Bears move to 9-1.

Just like Friday night's matchup, the Dinos and Golden Bears went point-for-point in the first set. Notably, Liam Kuppe had a powerful serving ace to keep the score differential close.

However, the Golden Bears eventually pulled away from Calgary to take the set by notching the final three points.

The Dinos started the second set on top, playing a tight and dynamic game to hold the lead. But Alberta would eventually meet Calgary in points, knotting things up at 15-all. Things would stay tight from there, but the Bears once again did just enough down the stretch for the narrow set-two win.

Calgary finally had its efforts rewarded in the third with their first set win of the weekend against their provincial rivals. After jumping out to a 10-5 lead, the two rivals continued to trade blows and things were all tied up at 24-24. Erik Godwin hammered home a pair of kills to give the Dinos the set win.

Energized from taking a set, the Dinos continued their momentum into the fourth, as the theme of an early Calgary lead and close contest late continued. Trailing 19-17, Alberta leaned on its veteran leadership to once again make the right moves late, finishing the match on a 6-0 run to complete the weekend sweep.

The Dinos are back in action next weekend to host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack at the Jack Simpson Gym. Friday's match starts at 6 p.m. while Saturday's match starts at 7:45 p.m. The Golden Bears will head back home next weekend to host the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. Friday's game starts at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's game will start at 5 p.m.
