Game Recap: Golden Bears Hockey | | Saskatchewan Sports Information

Three goal third period lifts Golden Bears over Huskies

SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team was unable to find the back of the net in the third period, as they fell 4-1 to the visiting Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place.

Alberta scored twice in 24 seconds in the third period, which ultimately was the difference in the hockey game. Gary Haden's powerplay marker — the first of the two tallies — was his seventh of the season and it gave the Golden Bears the lead. Noah Philp walked in on Roddy Ross just moments later and picked the corner to provide all the insurance the visitors needed.

It was the Golden Bears who opened the scoring just 5:19 into the hockey game, but Saskatchewan quickly responded as Justin Ball potted home his ninth of the season to make it 1-1 — a score that would hold until the aforementioned Haden tally.

The Huskies mustered 10 shots on goal during the final frame, but ultimately weren't able to solve Schneider once again, who made 31 saves for the visitors, who improved to 11-2-1 and now sit in first-place of the Canada West. The biggest of the stops was a glove save on a Parker Gavlas penalty shot just 3:12 into the frame, which would've gave the home side the lead.
At the opposite end of the ice, Roddy Ross made 22 saves on the night for Saskatchewan.

With the loss, the Huskies fell to 10-6-0 and now sit in fourth-place in the Canada West with four games remaining in the regular-season.

Saskatchewan has conference matchups on tap against the MacEwan Griffins — who they will face off against in two weeks time in Edmonton — and the Manitoba Bisons, before the postseason gets underway.
