Pandas dominant in 2-0 win against Lethbridge

Snaps 5-game winless skid to start season

EDMONTON - An early header from third-year forward McKayla Brault powered the Pandas ahead in a 2-0 victory at a rainy Foote Field Sunday afternoon.

Megan Duro provided a 63rd minute strike to tie a bow on easily the best Pandas performance in this young season.

Despite the two goals allowed, Pronghorns keeper Bridie Harding played an otherwise excellent game amidst an Alberta attack that generated 11 shots on target.

This is the opening win of the 2021 season for the Pandas (1-2-0), which comes after a 2-1 loss to the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday. The Pronghorns (0-2-0) now open the season with back-to-back losses, after dropping a 3-1 decision to Mount Royal on Friday.

QUICK HITTERS

  • This is the first Pandas victory since October 19th, 2019 - a 2-1 result against the Regina Cougars.
  • This victory marked the first Canada West win for 2nd year head coach Kristyn Shapka
  • Alberta and the Pronghorns will meet twice more this season, a weekend series on October 9th & 10th to be played in Lethbridge.
The Pronghorns started the first half very strong, with a 3rd minute crossbar strike from midfielder Mikayla Fujimoto part of four Lethbridge shots in the opening five minutes. Alberta tightened up the rest of the half, outshooting the Pronghorns 9-2. A 39th minute goal from McKayla Brault put the Pandas up 1-0 heading into the half. It was the first goal of her collegiate career, helped out by a beautiful cross from Cara Lang.

Alberta sustained the momentum throughout the second half, owing to strong defensive play from the back and midfield. Rookie defender Kelli Haffie was a performer of note, giving virtually no space to the Pronghorn attack.

A drop pass from Brooke Lang in the 63rd minute to midfielder Megan Duro found mesh to put the Pandas up 2-0, all but finalizing the first victory of the season for Alberta.

The Pandas next game is Saturday, September 18th against the Mount Royal Cougars (1-1-0), ranked 12th in the preseason coaches poll. Lethbridge returns home to battle MacEwan (1-1-0) on the 18th as well.
