Second-half surge gives Bears third win

Alberta outscores Mount Royal 49-28 in second half

EDMONTON - In a wild back-and-forth match-up the University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 83-72, Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

With the win the Bears remain in first place in the central standings, while the Cougars (2-1) will have to settle for second, as they drop their first game of the season. The Bears improved to 3-0.

In the win, third-year Bear Geoffrey James scored a game-high 23 points on the night while adding five rebounds. Fellow third-year Brandon Meiklejohn was equal to the task, netting 18 points.

Across the court, the Cougar found leadership in second-year Nate Petrone adding 17 points to their total. Not far behind was second-year Brock Dewsbery with 14 points on the night.

The first quarter was nothing short of entertaining, with both teams exchanging the lead throughout. However, it would be the Bears who would hold the lead to take the momentum into the second up 21-19.

The Bears would not be able to hold on to their lead for long as the Cougars were on the hunt, building a big 13-point lead midway through the second and heading into halftime up 44-34 and silencing the crowd. Patron scored five of his eight first-half points in the surge.

Slowly closing the gap, the Bears found themselves inching closer to the Cougars as time ticked away in the third quarter. With just 26 second left in the quarter captain Cole Knudsen pulled the Bears ahead by two taking the leading 55-53 into the final and deciding quarter.

Keeping the scoreline close for the first three minutes of the quarter, the momentum officially broke free for the home side as leading rebounder Holt Tomie was tossed from the game for a technical foul with the Bears up by a slim margin, 60-58. That would be all the game needed to extend their lead 83-72, keeping their perfect season intact.

Looking ahead, both teams will meet again on Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre for the second game of the weekend series, tipping off at 7:00 PM MT.
