CALGARY – The University of Alberta Golden Bears overpowered the University of Calgary Dinos, defeating their provincial rival 7-2 at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos were the more physically dominant team on Friday night, but it was the Golden Bears who outshot and outscored the home team.

In the opening period, Alberta outshot Calgary 15-7 but was denied an early goal by Dinos netminder Brodan Salmond. The Dinos nearly escaped the first period scoreless, but Eric Florchuk netted his first of the season with 17 seconds remaining in the frame.

The Golden Bears added three goals in the second period. Gary Haden got it started, Grayson Pawlenchuk increased the lead on a shot nearly stopped by Salmond, while Daneel Lategan made it a 4-0 game with a power-play goal.

Connor Gutenberg and Josh Rieger tallied goals in the third period for Calgary, but Alberta responded with three more. Ryan Hughes and Tyler Preziuso found the back of the net for the first time, while Lategan picked up his second of the night.

Calgary will look to regroup on Saturday night when they host the MacEwan Griffins at Father David Bauer Arena. The Golden Bears stay in Calgary and will match up with the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday.
