EDMONTON - A quintet of Golden Bears earned conference honours on Wednesday, as five Bears were named 2021 Canada West All-Stars.
Guard
Rodeem Brown was named the lone offensive All-Star, with Sam Linebacker
Josiah Schakel, Halfback
Tyshon Blackburn, and Safety
Jayden Dalke earning defensive nods, and kicker
Jonathan Giustini earning a special teams spot.
Saskatchewan (10) and Manitoba (6) were the only schools to earn more All-Star appearances than the Bears five, with Calgary earning four, and UBC and Regina have two each.
2021 marks the first All-star appearance for Brown, who anchored an offensive line that allowed just 8 sacks in six games.Â
Schakel led Canada West with 51.5 tackles this season, with his 8.6 tackles per game leading the nation. He also added four sacks and eight tackles for a loss. Blackburn recorded 22.5 tackles at halfback this season, adding a team-high two interceptions and three pass breakups.Â
This marks the second-consecutive all-star nod for Dalke, who was also named a U SPORTS All-Canadian in 2019. The Bears safety recorded 24.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss in six games.Â
Giustini's 77% field goal percentage was the highest in Canada West, as he hit 10 of his 13 attempts this season. He was also a perfect 18/18 on converts this season, with his 53 points the second-most in CW.Â
The third-seeded Bears will head to Winnipeg this weekend, as they take on the Manitoba Bisons on November 13th in a Hardy Cup Semifinal.Â
