Bears clinch second in central division

Alberta to host UFV in Canada West Quarter-final

SASKATOON - Needing a point to jump into second in the Canada West central division, the Golden Bears closed out their regular season with a 0-0 draw against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday afternoon.

The draw pushes the Bears record to 4-1-5, as they leapfrog the Calgary Dinos in to second, and will host the UFV Cascades next Friday afternoon in a conference quarter-final matchup.

Unfortunately for Saskatchewan, a MacEwan Griffins victory over the Calgary Dinos earlier in the afternoon spelled an end to the Huskies season, regardless of their result versus Alberta.

Nonetheless, it was a valiant effort from the green-and-white, who recorded a draw against the playoff-bound Golden Bears.

Liam Collens turned aside all five shots he faced to earn his third-consecutive clean sheet, and six total on the season.

Bateman Cup:

The match served as the annual Bateman Cup match on Sunday. The Bateman Cup was established in 2016 to honour veterans from the First World War from Saskatoon and was named after Reginald John Godfrey Bateman. Bateman, a former professor at uSask, was the university's captain of their soccer team before enlisting in the war in 1914.

The game is played each year against Alberta, who served as Saskatchewan's first-ever inter university soccer opponent, when they took the pitch against one-another in 1911.

For the second time in Bateman Cup history, the programs shared the trophy after the 0-0 draw.
