Pandas drop season finale to Dinos

Pandas end season with 24-0 home loss

EDMONTON - On a rainy Octobers night, the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Alberta Pandas 24-0, Friday night at Foote Field.

The game marked both teams final showdown of the Canada West regular season, with the Dinos continuing on to host the Canada West Final Four next weekend. Meanwhile, the Pandas will see their season come to an end.

In a game that provided plenty of space for line breaks, the Dinos Taejah Thompson was able to capitaize on two of her chances, while the Dinos forwards being equal to the task with eight-man Alyson MacDougall and Daisiy Shackley both increasing the Dino lead. Berlyn Seselja and Patricia Lively added one convert each.


Before the game, graduating players from both sides were honoured, including six graduating Pandas players; Jody Siemens, Avery Archibald, Alexa Martin, Athea Volpe, Izzy McGowan, and Heidi Peake.

Wasting no time to getting on the score sheet, Thompson was able to find space down the side line to for her first try of the game just five minutes in. 

Midway through the first half, MacDougall, with the help of the Dinos forward pack were able to gain ground on the Pandas within he five metre line, before MacDougall sealed the deal, rolling off the scrum and diving across the line to increase the lead to 10.

Before the end of the first half, the Pandas generated their best chance of the game when captain Shelby Pierce was able to fight off a the Dinos for a long 50 metre dash before being hunted down.

In the second half, Thompson was able to secure her second try of the game in the 51st minute, breaking the defensive line to rush half the field to bring the Dinos lead to 17-0.

With the clock counting down, Dinos finisher Shackley, put the final stamp on the game, scoring off a sting of pick-n-gos within the Pandas five metre line.

Next weekend the Dinos will welcome the Canada West final four to Calgary, taking on the first place UBC Thunderbirds in the Semifinal, while the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Victoria Vikes will battle it out in the other Semifinal. All four teams will be looking to advance to the U SPORTS National Championships at Queens University, November 11th-14th.
