Pandas playoff chances take hit after loss to Calgary

Alberta women drop to 4-8-0 after 2-0 loss on Sunday

EDMONTON - The already slim playoff chances for the Alberta Pandas took a hit on Sunday afternoon, as the visiting Calgary Dinos completed their weekend sweep with a 2-0 victory at Foote Field.

The loss, which comes in the Pandas final conference game of 2021, drops their record to 4-8-0 this season. While the Pandas currently maintain the third seed in the central division, they could lose the Wildcard spot to the fourth seed in the West division. UFV currently holds the 4th seed in the West with a 3-4-2 record with three conference games remaining.

With the win, the Dinos stay in the race for the No. 1 seed in the Central division, with their record improving to 8-1-1. The 9-1 MacEwan Griffins maintain their top seed, with the two top seeds meeting next weekend in Calgary.

Canada West goals leader Montana Leonard added to her total with two more goals on Sunday, scoring her 15th and 16th goals of the season. Lauren Houghton turned aside all six shots she faced to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season.

Pandas starter Ashley Turner made nine saves in the loss for Alberta.

The Dinos were the dominate side in the first half, outshooting the Pandas 9-3. Turner, however, was able to stop all six shots she faced in the first 45.

Arguably the best scoring chance for either side came in the 54th minute, when Amy Mikuska was awarded a penalty. Her shot, however, was turned aside by a diving Turner, with the bar glancing off her glove then the right post.

Leonard finally got the Dinos on the board in the 69th, beating Turner for her third goal of the weekend. The fifth-year Dino added the insurance marker in the 86th, beating the Pandas keeper off a feed from Jayden Berg.

Georgia Tansley recorded three shots, including a pair on target in the second half, with Houghton stopping both with ease.
