LETHBRIDGE – Looking to build on their first victory of the 2021 campaign, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns found themselves overwhelmed in the first half by a motivated University of Alberta Pandas side, dropping a 4-2 decision to the visiting side.
Â
It was a tale of two halves for the Pronghorns, with the Pandas dominating the first half of play. Three goals would propel the visitors to a 3-0 lead after one half of play. A motivated 'Horns side would return to the pitch in the second half, making things interesting scoring twice. Lethbridge would more than double their goal total this weekend with four goals against the Pandas, raising their season total from three to seven.
Â
With the loss, the Pronghorns drop to 1-7-0 on the season, with four games to play in their schedule. The Pandas improve to 4-6-0, with two games remaining on the year.
Â
The Pandas scored the game's opening goal in the 6
th minute, thanks to a perfectly executed set piece corner kick.
Georgia Tansley would cross the ball into the far-right post, with Paige Jameison going untracked for the easy header finish.
Â
Alberta would continue controlling pace of play, capitalizing on two defensive miscues by the Pronghorns. First, a missed header by a 'Horns defender would find the foot of rookie Pandas midfielder
Wanda Czebreszuk. Her shot would be stopped by Bridie Harding, before rolling into the net. Alberta's third goal of the game would come on a missed clearance attempt deep in Pronghorn territory. Rookie forward
Adrienne Poulin would deliver a curling strike riding the wind from twenty-five yards out which would rise above Harding for the score.
Â
Lethbridge would find the scoreboard in the 56
th minute, thanks to a fantastic play between Kaleigh Harris and Anneke De Klerk. A throw in from Harris would return to her foot following a one touch pass from De Klerk. She would make no mistake with a left foot strike from thirty-yards out which would just curl inside the right post.
Â
The Pandas would score in the 64
th minute thanks to a 33-yard free kick strike from
Nicole McKay that would be aided by the wind.
Â
It would be déjà vu in the 82
nd minute, with Kaleigh Harris once again finding Anneke De Klerk. In identical fashion to her first goal, De Klerk would curl the ball inside the right post with a gorgeous left foot strike.
Â
The Pronghorns will travel to Edmonton next weekend to face the surging MacEwan University Griffins, while the Pandas will return to Foote Field to host the University of Calgary Dinos.
