EDMONTON - Dwayne Jean Jr. scored the game-winner just over one minute into overtime, securing the first ever home win for MacEwan over Alberta with a 4-3 victory.
It is the sixth-straight loss for the Bears, who now hold just a one point lead over the Griffins for second place in the West Division.
Tyson Laventure scored twice on the power play for Alberta, striking twice in a 20-second span late in the first period. Adam Hall added a second-period power-play marker, finishing the night with a goal and an assist. Sam Popowich recorded two assists, while Dawson Davidson chipped in two helpers of his own.
For MacEwan, Jean Jr. delivered the decisive blow, scoring twice — including the overtime winner. Carter Chorney scored once and assisted once, while Ethan Sundar contributed two assists. Goaltender Zac Onyskiw was sharp, making 24 saves on 27 shots.
First Period
MacEwan opened the scoring at 5:50, when Jean Jr. buried a centering feed from Sundar. Alberta pushed back with pressure but failed to convert on an early power play.
Momentum swung late in the period when consecutive minors to Sam Simard and Logan Dowhaniuk created a lengthy 5-on-3 opportunity. At 19:35, Laventure tied the game on the power play, finishing a pass from Davidson. Just 20 seconds later, Laventure struck again — this time off feeds from Davidson and Adam Hall—giving Alberta a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.
Second Period
Alberta continued to capitalize on special teams. At 13:14, after a delay-of-game penalty to Chorney, Adam Hall fired home a power-play goal assisted by Popowich and Blake Gustafson to extend the lead to 3-1.
MacEwan responded at 16:58, when Chorney finished a rebound from Logan Dowhaniuk and Sundar, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Alberta limited further damage thanks to a strong period from goaltender Ethan Kruger, who made 13 saves before giving way to Ethan Barwick.
Third Period
MacEwan equalized at 7:57, as Myles Gauld redirected a pass from Rhett Dekowny with Dowhaniuk earning another assist. Alberta generated two late power-play chances but could not convert, with Onyskiw closing the door.
Overtime
Just 71 seconds into the extra frame, Jean Jr. stripped Laventure of the puck, racing down the ice before beating Ethan Barwick on a breakaway to win the game.
The final game of 2025 will be hosted by the Bears on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
